Data literacy: Managing the information trails generated by our personal and professional lives
Now that our daily lives produce mountains of data—through our social interactions, financial transactions and everything in between—what skills do we need to safeguard our privacy? What skills do people working with data need to sort through this mass of information? Drawing upon a year-long study of big data experts, Monica Bulger will discuss the emerging need for data literacy — for data workers, an ability to sift and prioritize, to find the data story, and be comfortable with uncertainty, for the rest of us, an understanding of what is being collected, how it is used, and areas of true concern. We will engage in a collective discussion of the role of libraries in mediating public understanding of and engagement with personal and institutional data.
